Welcome to Harvesters Heart, my educational platform.
My work life began as a teacher. After a decade in education, I started a 35-acre market garden called, Local Harvest. I'm a gardener at heart but I haven't lost the teacher within. It's only natural that these two passions should one day converge.
I'm on a mission to help gardeners become food self-sufficient. I can no longer bear the thought that families with access to good land are reliant on imported food while their yard, or the acreage lies fallow.
Most of the information I share on this platform has been gleaned over the years from other brilliant minds in the regenerative agriculture space. What I've done is taken their ideas, put them to the test on the farm, and repackaged them in an organized framework that's accessible to all.
I trust that you'll discover this space to be a treasure trove of information and inspiration on your gardening journey.

"This past spring I had the pleasure of taking part in the gardening course offered by Local Harvest. As a professionally trained horticulturalist I was unsure going into this course how much new information I would learn or if it would be more of a refresher for me personally. The wealth of knowledge that Dan and Jack possess from a lifetime of sustainable growing is truly unparalleled. From the moment I stepped foot in that class I was blown away by the level of expertise they had to share. Whether you are a beginner just getting into gardening or a seasoned grower, there is undoubtedly something for you in this course. The value of knowledge that you will receive from this course is well worth the investment. I was particularly fond of the ecological approach they take to growing, starting with the development and preservation of a living soil. As a practitioner of the 'no dig' method of growing in my small backyard garden this was something I was very impressed by, especially learning about the scale at which Local Harvest is able to operate at using this method. Having put into practice a number of the concepts that I learned in this course, I was able to achieve my largest and most consistent harvests yet this past year. My family was essentially self sufficient for vegetables throughout the spring, summer, and into autumn. I would highly recommend this course to anyone who is interested in gardening, no matter your existing skill level. In addition to the wealth of knowledge that you will receive it is also a fantastic opportunity to network with fellow gardeners and like-minded individuals. Helping to develop a sense of community wherein you all grow together, sharing knowledge and expertise to create a more sustainable and food-secure future for ourselves, our neighbours, and the next generation. "
10/10 recommend this course! Dan is incredibly knowledgeable, has tons of experience and shares endless information on how to become a successful gardener, how to extend the season, and grow food all year long. I’m fairly new to gardening and after following many of the tips shared in this course, I had a garden bursting at the seams. I have never grown veggies like this; the onions were massive, carrots long and beautiful, corn doubled in size from the year before, gorgeous melons, the list doesn’t end. It was impressive! Highly recommended!
